Such a book cache is a fine thing, but when you hide a very visible clock inside you somehow miss the point ;-)
On the other hand you always know the time ;-)))

I’m glad to have found a wonderful tutorial for making book art as on the picture :)
It’s similar to the Shape Book.

One method to simplify the work on an altered book is to use children’s cardboard books as base. They often have the advantage, too, to have interesting shapes.
Once I began such a book (on the picture you see the original book).
These are the first two pages. I used amongst others (just as for the artist book) self-dyed paper, packing tape transfers, embroidery on paper and dried flowers and leaves.
Because of the embroidery I don’t immediately glue the papers in but I finish the pages first.
The following pages aren’t finished yet – just another UFO (unfinished object) ;-)

When I traveled I mostly wrote a kind of diary and afterwards I often made a photo album. I’ve never had the idea of creating a real travel journal.
Next time I really want to give it a try – in the same way that is shown here.
And if it won’t happen for any reason: you can certainly create a travel journal of a fictitious travel, too (best wishes to all those who think that I’m talking about them ;-))).

If you still have parts of the phone book you used to make the card holder you can complete your desk with a phone book pen organizer ;-)
And if you need a pen holder but don’t like this one, there are others here in the blog ;-)

I’ve seen some shaped books, at an exhibition e.g. in our public library and I always liked them.
Therefore I’ve been pleased to find a tutorial for shaped books – great! :))
By the way, there are folded books, too which seem to be interesting, too ;-)

If you want to make Altered Books or Artist Books, or maybe book purses, or you want possibly remove individual book pages to make a beautiful card, then the tutorial on how to easily remove pages from books may be helpful: you moist a thread, lay it into the book at the place where you want to remove a page, close the book firmly, so that the moisture can enter the paper and then you can tear the paper cleanly.
It’s the same principle as for tearing paper, but here the moist line is certainly straight and much thinner.
Ingenious!

Soon it may be that you get lots of books. You want perhaps to get rid of some old books – or even some new ;-))
Via How to Make and Do-How to recycle Books I found a tutorial for a really great book lamp.
There you can find other good ideas, too.
Find more ideas at How can I Recycle This?, e.g. to make an Altered Book from.
Then I found a tutorial on how to make a book lampstand (which I don’t find as beautiful as the book lamp, but it ‘uses’ more books ;-)).
I also liked the Bookhooks and Romans a clef great as an inspiration for crafters ;-)
I guess that you can make jewelry stands in the same way?!
I also found the book book ends, the book safe and another book safe, the “Audiobook” (an iPod case), the book book shelf and and and … ;-)

If you’re making altered books or cards, you often use single, meaningful words.
I have found a good proposal on how to illustrate words.
On the picture I tried to put the word ‘Glass’ onto the photo of the tesselation as if it was made of glass (not bad for a first try? ;-))
My inspiration was a tutorial on how to create a gel button.
It was fun ;-)

As I saw this tutorial on how to make vellum spirals I was amazed: such beautiful paper spirals and so easy to make!
On the photo you see my spiral with changing directions.
It looks so frail against the light.
The tutorial is in German, but there are explaining pictures (you must look at the PDF file!).
What you have to do is basically:
They suggest that you begin to experiment then:
I had a lot of fun and I hope so will you :-)
I intend to use those spirals in the future on cards, tags, in altered books and so forth.
I’d love to know about your experiments with folded spirals.
