unikatissima's lace knitter's advent calendar 2012
This year I designed a tablerunner that you can knit on the 24 days of Advent, every day a little bit.
In case that you don’t need a tablerunner simply knit a scarf :)

The picture is extra small – it gives you just an idea of what you will knit but (hopefully ;-)) don’t spoil the surprise.(And if you’re curious: there are more pictures ;-))

By the way, the whole pattern was made with the YouKnits lace basic set :)

Versions of the pattern

    This year I present the pattern in two versions:

  • Version ‘stockinette/garter’:
    unikatissima's lace poinsettia - version 'stockinette/garter'
    that’s how I knitted the tablerunner and this version has only knit stitches between the rows of holes, in the back rows you can decide whether you always knit (stockinette) or always purl (garter) and
  • Version ‘knit-purl’:
    unikatissima's lace poinsettia - version 'knit-purl'
    that’s how I knitted the scarf and there I filled the areas between the rows of holes alternately with knit stitches and purl stitches.
  • Additionally I present at ravelry – so to speak in passing – the patterns of six placemats matching the tablerunner:

About the pattern:

* This year the pattern is ‘complete’, i.e. not meant to be repeated in height or width.
* The pattern is
    – 51 stitches wide (without edge stitches),
    – needs at least 2 edge stitches extra and
    – the total length are 482 rows.
* It is made symmetrical, so if you think that it is
    – too wide, leave out the same number of stitches at begin and end of every row and
    – too long, leave out the same number of rows at the begin and end.
   The following items would e.g. look beautiful:
    – from day 2 row   5 to day 23 row 18 = 434 rows
    – from day 3 row   9 to day 22 row 14 = 386 rows
    – from day 6 row 13 to day 19 row   9 = 258 rows

About the finished items:

Please bear in mind: the size always depends on your gauge and also on the way you knit – I’m always knitting very loosely.

For the tablerunner I
* knitted about 575 m white cotton crochet thread (100 g ca. 580 m)
   (575 m are about 629 yards – 580 m are about 635 yards) with
* 4 mm needles
* in the version ‘stockinette/garter of the pattern and
* got a tablerunner of about 28 x 166 cm without garter border and
   (28 x 166 cm are about 11 x 65 inches)
* of about 30 x 168 cm with a border of
   8 rows garter stitch at the begin and end and
   4 stitches garter stitch at the begin and end of every row
   (30 x 168 cm are about 12 x 66 inches).
Depending on my daily energie I knitted a daily pattern section in 30 – 35 min.

For the scarf I
* knitted about 515 m acrylic yarn (200 g ca. 665 m)  (Belday Hit Handarbeitsgarn, dark pink)
   (515 m are about 563 yards – 665 m are about 727 yards) with
* 4 mm needles
* in the version ‘knit-purl’ of the pattern and
* got a scarf of about 30 x 156 cm without garter border and
   (30 x 156 cm are about 12 x 61 inches)
* of about 35 x 160 cm with a border of
   8 rows garter stitch at the begin and end and
   4 stitches garter stitch at the begin and end of every row
   (35 x 160 cm are about 14 x 63 inches).
Depending on my daily energie I knitted a daily pattern section in 35 – 40 min.

For every placemat I
* knitted about 90 m white cotton crochet thread (100 g ca. 580 m)
   (90 m are about 99 yards – 580 m are about 635 yards) with
* 4 mm needles
* in the version ‘stockinette/garter of the pattern and
* got placemats of about 28 x 20 cm without garter border and
   (28 x 20 cm are about 11 x 8 inches)
* of about 30 x 22 cm with a border of
   6 rows garter stitch at the begin and end and
   3 stitches garter stitch at the begin and end of every row
   (30 x 22 cm are about 12 x 9 inches).
I knitted a placemat in barely 2 hours.

Design your own Lace with YouKnits

YouKnits_scarf

Did you knit the Lace Knitters Advent Calendar 2010?
And did you like the way the patterns flowed into each other?

I designed and published now a lot of patterns, called YouKnits, that you simply can combine and design your own lace pattern with.

    You can download three files for free:

  • the basic set, which contains eight basic square patterns and all triangles, that you can e.g. use for triangle shawls,
  • the how-to, a detailed instruction on how to combine YouKnits and
  • eine deutsche Kurzanleitung (a short German instruction).

Because it is usually not so easy to imagine how a pattern will look, there is the free YouKnits designer: you compose your pattern, click ‘make PDF’ and get a PDF file that you can save on your harddisk.

    The file contains:

  • an overview picture of your personal YouKnits design,
  • for large patterns a page reference chart (shows which part of the YouKnits distribution chart is printed on which page),
  • the YouKnits distribution chart (shows the order in which YouKnits have to be worked) and
  • a list of all the YouKnits you used in your personal pattern with links to the appropriate ravelry pages.

I think it’s best if you simply go and play around with the YouKnits designer ;-)
By the way, you can find there also a list of frequently asked questions and a Youknits designer description.

Oh, you’ve knitted enough shawls and scarves already?
No problem, I thought about what else to knit with the YouKnits and that’s what I came up with:

Well, that’s a lot, isn’t it? ;-)
By the way, in all examples I included some that only use the basic set :)
You can find the scarf of the picture at the YouKnits lace example shawl and at the moment I’m knitting a vest of this kind.
